Dear Friends, I was honored to be invited by leaders of the National Organization of Women Judges to accompany them when they met with Charles Samuels, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and his staff last Friday for an hour and a half, the discussion concerned the transfer of female prisoners from Danbury, CT, to Aliceville, AL This was followed yesterday with a 45-minute meeting with the Deputy Attorney General James Cole and his staff. The Deputy AG is the person from the Attorney General's Office that has a special relationship with the Bureau of Prisons.

Both meetings were very productive and we appreciate the time and information shared. However, we still cannot support transferring the female prisoners from Danbury, CT, to Aliceville, AL, or even the closing of this female prison and making it a male prison.

Below is an email we received from Judge Brenda Murray who facilitated these meetings and has asked us to generate communications from the people that will be affected by the Danbury closing to women prisoners. We know it may be hard for you to help in generating these communications. However, even if you cannot do this, you may want to contact the Senators below (especially if you live in his or her state).

A delegation from the women judges met recently with the Deputy Attorney General and the Director of the Bureau of Prisons and it appears there will no longer be a women’s prison in the Northeast or mid-Atlantic, including the District of Columbia, unless people speak up. Here is the contact information for all the Senators from this area. Simon, Sam (Judiciary-Dem) ; and Anya McMurray (Anya_McMurray@judiciary-dem.senate.gov) are also interested in hearing from people directly involved.
