On March 15, 2013 Reentry Central provided several facts concerning women engaged in the criminal justice system.
According to the National Resource Center on Justice-Involved Women (NRCJIW) the average female inmate is:
In her thirties
Convicted of drug related crimes
Undereducated and lacking skills
Living in poverty
Unemployed
NRCJIW also found that incarcerated women are:
Disproportionately women of color
Mothers to minor children
Victims of physical and/or sexual abuse
Experiencing substance abuse issues
Experiencing health problems
Experiencing mental health issues
Less than a year later the American Jail Association offered its own study on females in American jails. And while “10 Facts About Women In Jails” reiterates some of the facts covered by the National Resource Center on Justice-Involved Women, it also provides information on female reentry and costs associated with jailing female offenders, as well as other gender-based issues.
