A recent email sent out by Californians for Safe Neighborhoods and Schools urged California voters to vote “yes” on the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act, better known as Proposition 47 or Prop 47 this November.
The California Partnership website explains what Prop 47 is all about:
“The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act of 2014 is a voter initiative for the November 2014 California ballot that will change sentencing for low-level nonviolent crimes such as simple drug possession and petty theft from felonies to misdemeanors and direct financial savings to K-12 schools, mental health treatment, and victim services. This reform maintains the current law for registered sex offenders and anyone with prior convictions for rape, murder or child molestation.”
But the email also mentioned a subject that has not garnered much media attention, and that is Prop 47 would help women stay out of prison and provide a better life for themselves and their children.
The email provided a link to a Los Angeles Times article that pointed out that compared to men, California women are negatively impacted by current laws. According to the article California women are disproportionately incarcerated for the crimes that fall under Prop 47, and suffer more serious consequences.
