The City of New Haven, Connecticut is responding in a bold new way to create a national model to tackle the problem of recidivism.
Acting on a belief that incarcerated individuals need reentry help long before they are released, a collaborative of more than 40 New Haven organizations has designed a program in which all incarcerated New Haven citizens will receive reentry help starting at least nine months before they are released. Assistance will be available up to three years post incarceration and will include everything from job training to housing assistance, health services, workforce training and legal advice.
The New Haven program is being funded by a combination of state and Federal funds, foundation grants, and in-kind services. Dr. Martha Okafor, community services administrator for New Haven, envisions a program which will eventually be extended to provide assistance which begins at the time of sentencing and continues throughout incarceration up to the time of successful community reintegration.
