A Must Read Report Details How the War on Drugs Harms Our Veterans
Date:  11-09-2015

To truly honor our veterans we must stop incarcerating them and instead offer the mental health and substance abuse treatment they require
On November 14, 2012 Reentry Central posted an article on the Drug Policy Alliance report Healing a Broken System: Veterans and the War on Drugs. The article stated:

Perhaps one of the most important documents on veterans, substance abuse and incarceration, Healing a Broken System not only provides shocking details of how the war on drugs is doing irreparable harm to our veterans and their families, but also offers several recommendations on treating veterans with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and substance abuse issues, and suggests changing the policy that disqualifies veterans from obtaining substance abuse disability status unless they also have PSTD. Alternatives to incarceration programs are suggested for veterans accused of a low-level, non-violent crime. The report includes sections on preventing suicide and drug overdoses of veterans.

Reentry Central believes “Healing a Broken System: Veterans and the War on Drugs” is worth re-posting as we honor those who served our country and now fall risk to serving time.
