If politics makes strange bedfellows, the coalition is, arguably, the most unusual Washington has seen in recent years, particularly considering the current era of hyper-partisanship.
The five-month-old organization, known as U.S. Justice Action Network, includes a group active in the tea party movement and a think tank whose leader was a senior Obama administration official. It may also be on the verge of an accomplishment few thought possible.
“It was a perfect storm of factors,” says Rebecca Vallas, director of policy for the liberal Center for American Progress, a member of the network, which is pushing for reform of the nation’s criminal justice system. Conservatives upset about government spending and liberals pushing for social justice found common ground in a fight to end mass incarceration in the United States. “It truly is remarkable, and rare,” Vallas says.
