Songs and stories by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men and women to be featured on album decrying racism in the criminal justice system
Reentry Central was intrigued when we received an email from Fury Young announcing the release of an EP, “Die Jim Crow,” that featured currently incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men and women. The men and women sing and tell the story of their lives and how racism is rampant in the criminal justice system and how prisons and jails are overpopulated with people of color.

Young explained how he was able to work with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to record men at the Warren Correctional Institution, a close security facility. Formerly incarcerated men and women were also recorded in New York City and Philadelphia. The EP is being funded by a Kickstarter campaign. It is Young’s hope that the Kickstarter campaign is successful and that this project can be replicated in other prisons across the country.

The following is the press release from Fury Young and revolutionsound contains a link to the mesmerizing “Die Jim Crow” video.

On May 1, 2016, producer Fury Young and revolutionsound will release the Die Jim Crow EP, a six song album recorded mostly at Warren Correctional Institution, a close-security state prison in Lebanon, OH. The rest of the EP was recorded in Philadelphia and New York with formerly incarcerated artists.

Die Jim Crow is a concept album about racism in the United States prison system written and performed by formerly and currently incarcerated black songwriters from across the country. The EP is a precursor release to the full length LP, a double album which will drop in 2018.

Die Jim Crow is produced by Fury Young, a poet, musician, and activist from New York City. Co-producing is veteran producer and vocalist Dr. Israel, whose solo career has spanned three decades and seen collaborations with greats such as Sepultura, Bill Laswell, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Bernie Worrell, and Santigold.

Currently, the Die Jim Crow EP has an active Kickstarter campaign which can be found here, along with the video.
