In her new brief, former Wisconsin public defender, and now law professor at Valparaiso University, Geneva Brown sheds light on the reentry process of African-American woman. The brief, The Intersectionality of Race, Gender, and Reentry: Challenges for African-American Women,” determines that most African-American women returning to their communities are denied the support they need to prevent them from returning to prison.

Affordable housing, food stamps and other forms of public assistance, as well as employment opportunities, are often not provided as women struggle with reentry. Past issues such as sexual and physical abuse are often other issues women must deal with when they are released, according to the author.
