I’ll never forget how I felt when the computer screen went black before displaying: “We’re sorry, but your response to one of the questions indicates that you are not qualified for this job. Thank you for your time.”
I had been applying for a job to work from home, had entered all of my basic information — name, address, work history. But once I took a deep breath and responded “yes” to the question, “Have you ever been convicted of a crime?” the endeavor came to an abrupt end.
