Ways to eliminate costly incarceration costs create suggestions for policy changes
Mark Mauer of The Sentencing Policy recently released a report The State of Sentencing 2010: Developments in Policy and Practices which examines criminal justice reform in 23 states. The report includes efforts such as:

• New Jersey: Modified mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses in drug-free school zone cases; the change is estimated to save $29,000 per participant.

• South Carolina: Enacted a comprehensive bipartisan reform package that eliminated the disparity between crack and powder cocaine sentences and modified penalties for specified crimes.

• Colorado: Modified parole policies to emphasize treatment over incarceration and earmarked cost savings from reduced incarceration to job assistance and treatment programs.

• Vermont: Legislature set goal of reducing incarceration rate to 300 people or less per 100,000 from the current rate of 370 per 100,000.

The Sentencing Project encourages readers of the report to contact the author, State Advocacy Coordinator Nicole D. Porter at nporter@sentencingproject.org to discuss how SP can help with sentencing reform in the reader’s area.
