Safer Foundation President Addresses the House Appropriations Committee
Date:  03-21-2011

Diane Williams presents models for alternatives to incarceration, and development of diversion programs
The Safer Foundation is a Chicago-based non-profit founded in 1972 with the goal of helping formerly incarcerated persons to find employment. In its almost 30 years of existence the Safer Foundation expanded its services by providing help to individuals with issues such as substance abuse, lack of education, a poor work history and in need of life skill training. Now located in 20 facilities in the Illinois-Eastern Iowa area, the Safer Foundation offers a 60 bed residential transition center to those being released from prison, and is the only non-profit agency too supervise the Illinois Department of Correction’s transition centers.

Long recognized by those in the criminal justice reform field as the model for programs that help the formerly incarcerated transition successfully back into their communities, lower the recidivism rate, and increase public safety, the Safer Foundation recently sent its president to Washington, D.C. to urge the subcommittee to continue funding reentry initiatives, and to promote alternatives to incarceration, along with expanding diversion techniques.
