I'm pleased to announce the release of The Sentencing Project's 2018 Annual Report. It documents our contributions to a rapidly growing consensus that we must reduce the country's misguided reliance on mass incarceration.
As excited as we are that the political climate is changing, we recognize how far we still have to go. It will take an unwavering and active commitment by all of us to reach our goal of a fair and truly equitable justice system. We look forward to updating you on what we think will be a year of significant reform and on the work we do to support lasting change.
Among the highlights of our work and impact this year, The Sentencing Project:
Published The Meaning of Life: The Case for Abolishing Life Sentences, a well-received book that serves as the centerpiece of our 2019 national campaign to reduce the use of life sentences and cap sentences at 20 years, except in unusual circumstances.
Assisted local organizers and lawmakers in more than 15 states to develop and refine their communications plans, political strategies and public education campaigns to successfully advance voting rights, sentencing reform, juvenile justice and alternatives to incarceration.
Joined with our colleagues to ensure that the First Step Act passed by Congress would include sentencing reform provisions, as well as expanded programming in federal prisons.
