New York Governor Supports Raising Prison Labor Wages to $3 Per Hour

ALBANY — The controversy over proposed fees for new license plates is also drawing attention to the low wages paid to New York state prison inmates.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said he would back a higher minimum wage for inmates, who currently earn between 10 cents and $1.14 per hour for their work.

Legislation that stalled in both houses of the Capitol this year would increase the minimum wage for inmates to $3 per hour. Inmates in New York are among the nation's lowest paid, earning an average of 62 cents per hour, according to a 2017 study from the Prison Policy Initiative. Continue reading >>>
