In March 2020, at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States, The Marshall Project began to track how many people were sickened and killed by COVID-19 in federal and state prisons across the country. For more than a year, working with The Associated Press, we updated the numbers every week. In June 2021, as cases were declining from their peaks and prison agencies released less information, we stopped collecting these figures. Here you’ll find a summary of how COVID-19 ravaged those in prison — both the incarcerated and employees.
