Fred Nelson was a volunteer chaplain at Stateville Prison in Joliet, Ill. several years ago when he found a new calling: addressing the criminal justice system’s “invisibility problem.”
People in prison “couldn’t easily see the available help for them that was out there,” Nelson said.
“And because it was invisible to them, they went through a lot of chaos and had a very bumpy landing when they came out.
“That took an enormous human toll on people’s health, their family relationships and more.”
