The Council's Task Force on Long Sentences is examining how long prison terms affect public safety, crime victims and survivors, incarcerated individuals and their families, communities, and correctional staff and developing recommendations that will strengthen public safety and advance justice.

Today the Task Force released a statistical portrait of the nation’s use of long sentences. Through a series of charts, Long Sentences by the Numbers outlines the most current and comprehensive data available on the nature and extent of long sentences, which the Task Force defines as prison terms of 10 years or more.
