Survey found overwhelming support across party identification
From FAMM:

New polling from FAMM found that more than 80% of Americans believe state and federal prisons should be subject to independent oversight. That overwhelming support was consistent across party identification, garnering 79% of Independents, 80% of Republicans, and 85% of Democrats. Nearly three-quarters of respondents said prisons should be inspected by professionals who are independent of the system they are inspecting, and 68% said they did not trust government agencies to investigate their own problems and report on them to lawmakers and the public. “With no meaningful oversight, our prison systems are rife with waste, fraud, and abuse,” said FAMM President Kevin Ring. “Incarcerated people and correctional officers are not safe, and our elected leaders are not even aware of the problems that need to be fixed.”
