The Sentencing Project issued a report that shows 13 states lead the country in closing prisons. On the Chopping Block: State Prison Closings reports that the closings of these prisons will reduce prison capacity by over 13,900 beds.
New York and Texas are in the forefront of closing prisons, resulting in reducing the prison population by 3,880 and 2,139 inmates respectively. Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Michigan, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington and Wisconsin are the other states that have closed prisons, thereby saving the states billions of dollars, and allowing non-violent offenders to become involved in alternatives to incarceration programs.
The report was issued to stimulate other states into action, and to inform interested parties on how to support sentencing reform in their areas.
