Justice Policy Center Report Shows HUD’s HOPE IV Initiative Successful
Date:  09-13-2011

Closing and redeveloping troublesome public housing sites found to lower crime rate
The Urban Institute Justice Policy Center offers information on a Housing and Urban Development program that has been shown to reduce crime in the area around formerly troublesome public housing sites that were closed down, redeveloped, and reopened. The report, Movin' Out: Crime and HUD's HOPE VI Initiative, was written by Meagan Cahill, Samantha S. Lowry, and P. Mitchell Downey, JPC Research Associates. The three public housing sites, located in Milwaukee, WI, and Washington D.C., were redeveloped under HUD’s HOPE VI initiative. According to the JPC report evidence was found "in all three sites that crime dropped at some point during redevelopment. Authors also observed a diffusion of benefits in crime reductions in areas surrounding the redeveloped sites, suggesting that large-scale public housing redevelopment initiatives like HOPE VI can benefit both residents and the greater community."
