Incarcerating kids ineffective, claims Annie E. Casey Foundation
new report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, entitled No Place for Kids: The Case for Reducing Juvenile Incarceration, contains evidence to support the assertion that incarcerating kids simply doesn't work. Information contained in the report shows that youth prisons not only do not reduce offending but they also frequently expose youth to dangerous and abusive conditions. Further, the report confirms that many states have substantially reduced their juvenile correctional facility populations in recent years, without seeing any resulting increase in juvenile crimes or violence. The report also highlights successful reform efforts from several states and provides recommendations for how states can reduce juvenile incarceration rates and redesign their juvenile correction systems to better serve young people and the public.
