Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) officials say they intercepted an attempted drone delivery of contraband at Sussex I State Prison early Monday, seizing items valued at about $324,000 at prison prices.
VADOC staff discovered a suspicious package at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, leading to the seizure of about a pound of suspected methamphetamine and other contraband.
The package also contained 17 cell phones and charging cables, three USB Wi-Fi adapters, two SIM cards, multiple hex wrenches, glue, lighters, cigarettes, loose-leaf tobacco, cigars, tattoo ink and perfume. Officials also found 20 pages of paper that appeared to be saturated with an unknown liquid.
The Virginia Department of Corrections Office of Law Enforcement Services is investigating the attempted delivery.
VADOC Director Joseph W. Walters praised staff for their vigilance and said the incident highlights efforts by some individuals to use sophisticated methods to smuggle drugs and other contraband into correctional facilities.
