Fair Sentencing Act “Milestone” in U.S. and Foreign Drug Policy Reform, Report Claims
Date:  12-07-2011

Drug and sentencing reform should be expanded beyond U.S. borders, paper asserts
Once again Kara Gotsch, Director of Advocacy of The Sentencing Project, has written a first-rate report on criminal justice reform. This time her efforts are directed on the Fair Sentencing Act and its effect on U.S. and foreign drug policy. The report, Breakthrough in U.S. Drug Sentencing Reform: The Fair Sentencing Act and the Unfinished Reform Agenda, is published by The Washington Office on Latin America, an organization that promotes human rights, democracy, and social justice.

According to the Sentencing Project, the report analyzes crack cocaine sentencing reform and ”identifies the factors that contributed to bipartisan support for the related legislation,” and also proclaims that the sentencing reform agenda remains “unfinished.” WOLA adds that the report concludes that “given the United States’ role as the principal architect and major proponent of a global drug control system that has emphasized ‘zero-tolerance’ and criminal sanctions, the passage of the Fair Sentencing Act is a milestone not only for U.S. policy, but also for reform advocates in other countries.”
