New York Times Op Ed questions rules that bar people with criminal histories from moving forward
Reentry Central has long been a proponent of changing local and state rules that prevent an individual with a criminal history from obtaining an honest livelihood, employment, or housing because of a criminal conviction that may have happened decades ago. The RC News archives and Library section are filled with articles and studies that show the harsh realties of collateral consequences that come with an arrest record.

The New York Times published an Op-Ed piece on January 9, 2012 that drives home the urgent need for local and state officials to rethink their policies concerning those with a criminal history, and make appropriate changes that will afford those with a conviction the opportunity to become productive citizens.

Alfred Blumstein and Kiminori Nakamura, authors of the Op-Ed piece offer one of the most balanced and informative articles on the subject of the necessity to do away with “forever rules” which imprison a person forever, even after he or she is released.
