Former Maryland Governor Plans Law School Clinic for Pardons

Leveling the odds” for pardons applicants goal of first-of its-kind law clinic
In an article that was co-published by Pro Publica and the Washington Post on March 5, an announcement was made that former Maryland Governor Robert Erich (R) plans to help establish a law clinic that would focus solely on pardons.

A December 9, 2011 article posted by Reentry Central reported on a Pro Publica investigation that found that whites are four times as successful as blacks in receiving a presidential pardon. Those figures, according to Pro Publica, helped motivate Erlich to start this first-of -its- kind law clinic.

Beside training law students how to effectively, and hopefully successfully, navigate the pardons process, Erlich foresees the initiative as developing “…a multi-pronged approach, including advocacy, public education and training,” as well as being a place “…where newly elected governors, their general counsels or chiefs of staff would also come and think about the pardon power.”
