National Drug Court Initiative offers fact sheet on reaching high risk and high need population
The National Drug Court Initiative of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals is offering a two-part Practitioner’s Fact Sheet Series, written by Dr. Douglas Marlowe, Chief of Science, Law & Policy at the NADCP. Dr. Marlowe is a noted expert in the field of Drug Courts, and is the author of A Sober Assessment of Drug Court.

The series is designed to “help Drug Courts begin to revisit their admission criteria to ensure they are serving the optimal target population but equipped to handle additional populations,” according to a NADCP announcement. Part one of the series, Targeting the Right Participants for Adult Drug Court, focuses on the fact that high-risk and high-need individuals benefit greatly by participating in a Drug Court Program.

Part two, Alternative Tracks in Adult Drug Courts: Matching Your Program to the Needs of Your Clients, “describes a conceptual framework and evidence-based practice recommendations for designing alternative tracks within a Drug Court to serve different types of adult participants who may not qualify as high-risk, high-need.”

Drug Courts have gained a reputation for keeping substance abusing individuals out of prison by offering them services that will help them overcome their addictions, and by providing them with resources that can guide them toward turning their lives around. Drug Courts participants are generally non-violent substance abusers, who may be first-time offenders.
