New study shows African-American students exposed to homicides score lower on tests during time period following murders.
On July 13, 2010 Reentry Central published an article about the devastating effects trauma can have on the lives of juveniles. In a new study, The Effect of Local Homicides on Children's Cognitive Performance, Patrick Sharkey, a New York University sociologist expands on that premise.

Sharkey found that African - American children in Chicago, more so than Hispanic or white juveniles in that city, had lower reading and vocabulary scores after a neighborhood murder was committed. The study of 6,041 murders showed that a week after a murder in their area, African-American children had lower scores than they did in a time period before the homicide took place. With so many murders occurring, Sharkey discovered that 15% of the African-American children in the study spent about 30 days out of the year operating with diminished learning abilities.
