Date:  07-28-2010

Bipartisan legislation will focus on thorough review of the criminal justice system.
H.R. 5143 was passed in the House of Representatives on July 27 by a a voice vote under the suspension of rules. The bipartisan effort now has to pass in the Senate. Senator Jim Webb introduced the bill and has been vocal in his belief that the criminal justice system needs to be reformed.

H.R 5143 proposes that a “blue-ribbon” panel will conduct an 18 month study in various areas, including sentencing policy, the US incarceration rate, public safety, law enforcement, substance abuse, mental health issues and reentry. Recommendations on how the system can be repaired will be made at the conclusion of the review.
