The John Jay College of Justice Research and Evaluation Center released a new report showing that crimes committed by youth have dropped dramatically and are at the lowest rate in 30 years.
According to the report, arrests for violent crimes committed by youth (murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault) dropped eleven percent in 2011. Arrests made for murder decreased 20 percent, forcible rape saw a six percent drop, and robbery and aggravated assault went down twelve percent and eleven percent respectively. Youth, in this report, are designated as being less than 18 years old.
Although the violent crime rate was reduced, the number of young people who were arrested in 2011 was 1.5 million. The majority of the crimes committed in the under-18 age group were not for violent offenses. Violent crimes by youth accounted for 68,000 of the reported arrests.
