Monitoring Device Program Receives Raves
Date:  08-24-2010

Dallas County has a three percent recidivism rate for those on ankle- monitors.
The Dallas Morning News reported on the low recidivism rate of formerly incarcerated persons who are on the ankle-monitoring device program. The program is viewed as a win-win situation for all involved. Those wearing the monitors are allowed to live in their community rather than in prison, and enjoy benefits such as living with family or loved ones, and being able to seek and obtain, employment freely. Dallas County commissioners are pleased because it is estimated that Dallas County will have saved almost $400,000 by September 1, 2010, the first anniversary of the ankle-monitoring device program.

The ankle-monitoring program was allotted a $200,00 budget after Dallas County commissioners reviewed a similar program in Brazos County. Previously nonviolent prisoners would work outside of the prison during the day, and then go back at night and on weekends, costing the county money. The success of the program was praised by the Dallas director of criminal justice. Ron Stretcher noted that out of 281 participants, 273 fulfilled the programs requirements, a success rate of 97%.
