Lawyers claim mentally ill prisoners are being physically abused
Anyone scrolling through the Reentry Central archives is familiar with the numerous articles based on problems in the California criminal justice system and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The Supreme Court ordered that California reduce the number of inmates in its overcrowded prison system based on findings that inmates were not getting proper health care, including treatment for mental illness. Governor Gerry Brown has appealed that decision and continued to resist the judges’ decision (see Reentry Central April 16, 2013).

The problems continue. On May 30, the L.A. Times reported that “prison lawyers” have filed a lawsuit claiming mentally ill inmates are physically abused.
